The Problem
You have a seven minute hourglass and an eleven minute hourglass. Which is the quickest way to time the boiling of an egg for fifteen minutes?
Think about it. Then click here for the solution.
The solution:
Start both the 11 and 7 minute timers and drop the egg in. When the 7 minute timer runs out turn it over. When the 11 minute timer runs out, turn the 7 minute timer over again. You will have 4 minutes left taking you to 15 minutes when the 7 minute timer runs out.
The Moral
It's always a great option to have the best and most appropriate tools for the job. The example above would have been so much easier with a stop watch. Sometimes, business reality does not allow us to have the most appropriate tool readily available at the time you need it. This may be due to budget restrictions, unforseen circumstances or whatever.
In such circumstances you have to use the resources available to reach the same conclusions. Over 14 years of experience has ensured that Thinking has found many ways of reaching the correct solutions. Often, it's not a matter of having the right tools, but the right thinking.
